So you did it… you got called in for an interview! Yay! You prepared everything beforehand, are feeling confident, and ready for anything that may be thrown your way. But what do you do after the interview? Do you just go home, wait by the phone, and keep checking your email? Heck no! There’s more work to be done to make sure they remember you.
Today, I am listing my top 3 reasons why you always should follow-up after an interview (and where to get the best stationary) for you to make the job yours.
Don’t write off thank you cards as old school. Thank you cards (and all things stationary) are greatly appreciated by many because it takes time to use. Anyone can say thank you through a quick email (which isn’t wrong), but actually sitting down and writing down interesting points from the interview, why you love the organization, and a sincere thank you, will make all the difference because you took the time.
Also, there is no reason you why shouldn’t send an email either. Mail does take a few days, so sending a thank you email, in addition to a thank you card, is not a bad idea. The beautiful thing about a thank you email is that it is quick so they will be able to recall who you are faster. The thank you card will be able to secure that memory once it arrives.
It Creates a Lasting Impression
Taking the time to pick out a thank you card that represents you (professionally, of course), is an excellent way to make a lasting impression. Not a lot of people get personal mail these days, so when they do, it’s special to them, and they remember it.
Whenever I get a card, I like to display it on my desk for a couple weeks because it reminds me that someone took the time to appreciate something I did or was thinking of me enough to write down why. I have a lot of respect for people that take the time to do something like this, and I know a lot of other people that do, too.
It Shows You Care and Want the Job
You know, you could say all the right things in the interview, look like a good fit for the organization – on paper and in person, and have great chemistry with the person(s) in your interview, but after the handshakes and walking out of the interview, there’s one more step to do. The next step that needs to be done is sitting down and writing that thank you card and email. If you don’t, they may think that maybe the interview did not go as well as they thought or you do not want the job.
Also, it is important not to put off following up either. You want to be the persistent one out of all of the other candidates they interviewed to follow-up within 24 to 48 hours to express that you really want to be a part of the organization. I’ve even stopped by and dropped off a thank card at the front desk the next day because I wanted it to get there faster than mail.
Where to Stock up on all of the Best Cards
Stationary and thank you cards are so easy to find. My favorite places to stock up (I’m not kidding – I stock up on thank you cards and blank cards like it’s my job), are TJ Maxx, Papyrus, and Staples. The best part is you can get nice looking ones for cheap or you can spend a little more for monogrammed ones – either way, I highly recommend having these cards on hand.
